When I was a child, Christmas was all about me. It was about what I was going to do, what I was going to eat and what I was going to get as a present. I didn’t rally care much about anything else at the time. Caring for others, comes a bit later.
It wasn’t until I was a teenager and started making my own money that I really started to shift my focus away from what I wanted, to what others wanted. I started to feel the joy of giving something to others, even more so if I had worked hard for the money I was using. Christmastime became less about what I was getting and more about what I could give others. Instead of wishing I’d get something really great, I started hoping that my gift to someone else was great.
I also started to appreciate more, that gifts aren’t about money, about who has the latest PlayStation or the biggest newest most powerful gadget. Sure, big expensive things are nice, but they won’t make you happy, not for more than a week or maybe even a day. I started to pay more attention to just being there with people. Being with my family and enjoying the atmosphere.
Christmas is a special time. Here in China you celebrate it, but without fully understanding its meanjbg and value. But its okay. You are learning and you are getting better. Just like we in the west are only starting to understand the significance of your spring festival. I’m sure we get credit for trying. But this year, instead of wishing something for your self, wish something for someone else. You’d be surprised how many will think of you if you show you think of them.
Christmas is a time for love, compassion, understanding and forgiveness. These are the last days of the year so forgive what anyone may have done to you, and start the new year with a fresh mind. Forget the troubles you’ve had, don’t dwell in the past and start the new year with excitement for what is yet to come. Forgive your boss for being bossy, forgive your employee for that mistake they made that wasn’t a big deal anyway. Forgive your mom for worrying about you too much because she loves you so dearly. Forgive your father for maybe not expressing his love enough. Forgive your brothers and your sisters for just being in your way sometimes and most importantly, forgive your self. Forgive your self for whatever you did or didn’t do because only then can you move on.
Try not to inspire those who will not be inspired, but try instead to Inspire yourself and let those who can, be inspired by you. This Christmas, I wish nothing for my self. But I wish that you will be happier, wealthier and healthier this holiday and in the year to come. May you have the strength to help others when their strength is failing, may you be someone’s voice, who cannot speak loud enough someone’s rock who cabd stand steady or someone’s wings when theirs are failing. May you be everything you want to be.
I may not know you that well. Maybe I’ve never seen your face or held your hand. But you are in my life and so this Christmas, I love you!
In Denmark, we celebrate Christmas on the 24th of December in the evening. We gather our family, have a big meal and then we open our presents, play games and enjoy each others company. In England and in the US, they open their gifts on Christmas morning on the 25th but mostly the tradition is the same. So today I wish you all, a Merry Christmas and a following Happy New Year.
